nurse-pump-supplement

Posted on February 7, 2007

This is the vicious cycle that we are trapped in. So far, I haven't been successful in giving Mateo 100% breastmilk. The whole thing is getting too frustrating! I find myself nursing him at times then giving him formula when he gets frustrated also because of the low milk supply/slow milk flow. I am back to trying to pump every two hours to try to boost my milk supply. Whenever Mateo is awake and hungry, I try to nurse him in between those pumping sessions. The thought of just giving in and quitting has crossed my mind more than once. It takes way too much effort to do all three (nurse-pump-supplement). I get to experience only a small portion of the pros and a lot of the cons of each one. Any advice/suggestions from breastfeeding/pumping mommies out there would be highly appreciated ;)

I have a plan, actually. My strategy right now would be to continue pumping until my milk supply is enough for Mateo. I only get 1-2 ounces of breastmilk for every 15-minute pumping session. Definitely not enough for our milk guzzler who can consume 4 ounces per feeding. Good thing that Mateo is not choosy when it comes to his milk, since he was introduced early to both, he doesn't mind shifting from breastmilk to formula even in one feeding session. Another thing I'm grateful for is his latch. I think we kind of got it down to pat now. We both have gotten the hang of it, it doesn't hurt anymore except during times when he gets really frustrated he would pull and 'bite' down on my nipple just to extract more milk.

I need more willpower for this.

ei mommy andrea, it’s normal to get frustrated. as in! may times talaga na parang feeling mo wala kang milk na napoproduce. pero one thing my ob advised me when I was getting frustrated, never give my baby formula pag nafufrustrate na ako. as long as nagsasuck si baby may milk at milk kang ipoproduce. sabi niya rin kasi puwedeng humina milk supply ko once binigyan ko ng formula si dwyn kasi yung milk supply mo depends sa demand ni mateo, so pag binigyan mo siya ng formula parang bawas yun sa milk supply mo. basta ibreastfeed mo lang siya continuously. si dwyn din nakatikim na dati ng formula nung medyo nafrustrate ako sa umpisa pero talagang i intended to follow my ob’s advise not to give him formula kaya talagang pinagtyagaan ko ibreastfeed siya after that 100%. my ob also advised me to take natalac capsules 2x a day. and caltrate plus also 2x a day for your bones para di maging osteoporotic later. tapos drink lots of fluids saka better if ulam mo usually may sabaw. true enough, 8 1/2 months na si dwyn and he’s still purely breastfed. and isa pa lalaki din si mateo, talagang matakaw yan, kaya i’m sure makakacatch up milk supply mo basta just continue breastfeeding him. try mo stop muna yung pagbigay ng formula kay mateo. and advise din ng ob ko don’t give water to your baby kasi pwede rin magcause ng problems ang water. sabi naman ng pedia ni dwyn di naman kelangan magwater ng baby if breastfed sya kasi mataas daw water content ng breastmilk. if i can do it, so can you mommy andrea. good luck po! :)
