part-time SAHM

Posted on May 2, 2007

I guess the title says how confused I am. I don't know what to call myself anymore. In my desire to be a SAHM and also be able to teach, I have committed myself to another schoolyear of teaching math part-time. I guess I never fully realized how much I love teaching until I've had to stay home and not see the kids for several months. It doesn't help that everytime I visit the school, my students would warmly and excitedly exclaim 'Teacher Andrea'. It also didn't hurt that a lot of them, some parents included, would tell me to go back.

Yes, I love teaching and this time, I am not doing it simply because I need the job or we need the money. This time around, I am also doing it for myself. Really, I earn more from blogging than what I will earn on a part-time basis. I don't mind though and with me handling just one class this schoolyear, I know I will be at my best teaching mode. At the same time, I still get to spend a lot of time with Mateo. I will be away from him for a maximum of three hours only! I have even arranged for me to be able to bring along Mateo and the yaya in case I'm not comfortable leaving just the two of them alone. I feel blessed. I am getting the best of two worlds that I love - being a mother and teaching.

there is a saying that “we cannot serve two masters at the same time”. but count to think of it, we can. all we need to do lang is be more organized and be better at time management.

i also felt the same when officemates visited me while i was on maternity leave. while i was then somewhere 90% convinced to resign from work and be a SAHM for my son, i realized how important my work was to me, that even i was away for about 5 months, they viewed my contributions still significant to accomplish a given task at work. :)

it is good to know that you can earn even without your work and the reason for doing part-time is to satisfy yourself… you are really blessed for having a choice like that Andrea.

you’re in a win-win situation whatever your decision might be… again good luck sis! ;)

luiza: Thanks! I’m really going to need it especially now that I have more distractions (i.e. Mateo) Hehe!

feng: Totoo, it feels great when you’re missed especially when it’s about something you feel strongly about. Time management has always been a BIG obstacle for me. I guess it’s not too late to learn ;)

Litzie: You can do it too! I mean do part-time if you want to still have more than enough time for Dustin. Lalo na you’ve started with PPP already. Hehe! It’s a choice talaga e. Me mga consequences pa din. Like kami ni Ramil, we realize that this means less eat outs, less luho for all three of us, talagang kailangan i-fit ang lifestyle sa choices. Ok lang namin sa ‘min yung trade-off kaya ayun… :)

ann: Please read my reply for Litzie…hehe! Dami na ways ngayon to earn from home. Kaya mo yan! Where do you live? Want to be a part-time teacher too? Hehe! Or set up your own mini law practice… discounted rates for mommies with legal needs :)

andrea, you’ve got the best of both worlds =) lucky you! and congratulations

what i’d do for a chance like that, unfortunately here, there is no chance to work since my papers says i am only a dependent, and hence not allowed to work. Hopefully when we get back to the Philippines. I still dream of going back into the corporate world someday.

That’s a great arrangement Andrea! Have fun.

It’s quite challenging to do part time here, it’s difficult to find affordable and realiable childcare.

it’s a matter of equilibrium.. if you think you’d feel happier with that arrangement, go for it.. great that you could joggle between the two sans problem.

Andrea, that’s what I do. Bring my children with me to work. I have two workplaces. One is at my in-laws place where I do one-on-one special ed tutorials. Of course, I can bring them there. One is in Ortigas Center where I teach three days/week. I can also bring them there because it is a pediatric center. Anyway, I can proudly say that they behave (meaning not make a mess, not make noise, not disturb other therapists in session) when we are there. This school year when my son will go to school, we are going to make other arrangements and I will just be bringing my youngest daughter with me there.

I am so glad and so blessed to be able to have them with me. But then again sometimes I say that that leaves me no choice since I don’t have a “yaya”. Still, I don’t regret having one. I am happy with the way things are.

oh, andrea, from my teacher/professor friends, i have always heard the saying “once a teacher, always a teacher”. this one-liner, i am sure, means a lot to you and the so many teachers out there. teaching is a vocation, sharing a part of oneself.

it seems like you have the best of both worlds now, doing what are closest to your heart–teaching and rearing up mateo. good luck!

sheilamarie: Thanks! Having the experience of living in another country is also enriching. I’m sure a lot of opportunities will come your way when you get back. In the mean time, enjoy your time with your Lucho :)

lady cess: Yeah, I figured that out also. I plan to enjoy both - teaching and taking care of Mateo. Though it could also mean double the worries. Hehe! :)

KK: Though childcare here is affordable, reliability could be quite difficult to come by. That’s why I plan to bring Mateo and the yaya along so that it would be easy to ‘watch over’ them even when I’m at work (I sound like a hovering and clingy mama, hehe!). I’m still very thankful and since the yaya we’re expecting is pretty young, I plan to just train her really well. :)

analyse: I really hope I can handle both. I’m still in the excitement stage but I know that having the best of both may also mean having the worst of both. Hehe! I guess I just have to take them on with a big grin :)

Julie: Hi teacher! :) I used to work in a corporate setting and what made me shift talaga to teaching is the possibility of having more time with my then future kids. I guess I was right! :) It’s great to know that nowadays, there are options for women like us who would also want to work. I admire na you can get by without a yaya! Siguro when Mateo gets a bit bigger.

sexy mom: I agree! I’ve only been teaching for 2 years and my hat goes off to those who’ve been doing it for years. It really takes a lot to be one. I hope I can measure up as well :)

I think that it’s wonderful that you can spend quality time with your son and at the same time pursue your passion for teaching. Having the luxury of both worlds is certainly a blessing you can be grateful for.

Rach: I am truly grateful! :)

Christianne: I hope so too. I am very optimistic about it, I just hope that if ever it becomes difficult to handle I would remember that I am lucky to be able to do both. Well, I could always read this post and all your comments to remind me ;)

Connie: Sayang nga dapat sila Alex ang iha-handle ko na Math. Kaso sa ibang level ako napunta. I was looking forward to handling their class pa man din kasi hindi ko pa sila naturuan :)
