to finish or not

Ramil’s brother is taking up nursing. He stopped school a few months ago and all of us are hoping that he’d get to finish it. He only has three more subjects to finish. Most of the members of their family are very supportive of his studies. An aunt, who’s a retired nurse, is even willing to give him some of the medical supplies he’s going to need. Right now though, his concern is to be able to financially provide for his one and a half year old daughter. Ramil and I are really praying that he gets to finish those three subjects. After graduating, surely, he’ll be in a better position to provide for his daughter.

2007 in review

2007 has come and gone. Before I move on to 2008, let me make a month-to-month recap of the previous year.

JANUARY – Gave birth!!! It was one helluva month for Ramil and me. There were a lot of adjustments for us and a roller coaster of emotions. We were ecstatic to finally have our little bundle of joy but we were also overwhelmed with everything else that comes with having a baby.

FEBRUARY – We had our first scare as parents. Sometime in February, we rushed Mateo to the ER due to high fever. It turned out that he had UTI and had to undergo a process called VCUG to check if any congenital disorder is causing it. Thank God they didn’t find anything. Nevertheless, we had to treat him with antibiotics for quite some time to make sure that the UTI won’t recur. Aside from this, Mateo started smiling a lot! He also started interacting with us with looks and small mouth movements.

MARCH – I stopped pumping! Despite my hard-headedness to purely breast feed Mateo, we’ve had a lot of breastfeeding difficulty. During this month, my breastpump’s white valve got broken and the extra valve got lost. It was a blessing in disguise because I finally felt successful in actually breastfeeding him. Mateo slowly learned control of his fingers and started learning how to grasp objects.

APRIL – Ramil’s 26th birthday. It has been the least celebratory compared to his birthdays in recent years. Blame it on our financial difficulties. We spent it in my parents’ house with spaghetti, lumpia, chicken, cake, and ice cream. Still, it was a happy one because of the new addition to our family. Mateo also started rolling over (tummy to back), making us wary of leaving him on the bed.

MAY – I committed myself to teaching part-time for the schoolyear. Ramil and I started hunting for another place nearer the school and we also started the hunt for Mateo’s yaya. After five months of taking care of my baby and the house on my own, help arrived by the end of May. Mateo also started doing the other kind of roll over (back to tummy) and he enjoyed it a lot. We also gave him his first taste of solid food!

JUNE – Mateo’s baptism! Ramil and I would have wanted to have him baptized earlier but we had difficulty saving up for it. Good thing the grandparents graciously helped us. Maybe they were afraid that Mateo will reach a year old before he gets baptized. Hehe! School started which means I started leaving Mateo with the yaya in the afternoons. It actually provided a good break for both me and him.

JULY – Mateo turned six months and there were a lot of things going on around him… He had his first studio stint at Pic-a-Boo, he started going up on all fours and making crawling movements, and we started him on a sippy cup. Ramil and I would lead a boring life if not for him, LOL. We also started preparing to move-in to a bigger house that is much closer to school.

AUGUST – The big move. Although I was slightly sad that Ramil and I will be leaving the first house we lived in as husband and wife, a few days in the new house made me so happy we moved there. It was Mateo’s seventh month and he has started pulling himself up to a standing position. This was also the month when I tried to wean him from the breasts. Unfortunately, he had other plans and I ended up trying to produce more milk to keep up with his demand.

SEPTEMBER – It was a pretty busy month for us, work-wise. Good thing Mateo gives us a lot of good things to look forward to at the end of a grueling work day. He has started walking around in his playpen and has started saying dada and nyanya.

OCTOBER – My birth month. Nothing much happened, I guess I’ve reached a point when I’d forget my own birthday. LOL. We just went out to have a nice dinner. One bad turn during this month was when Mateo’s yaya told us that her older brother wants her to stay with them.

NOVEMBER -  We were yaya-less during some parts of the month. Not to mention that we also had two different yayas at some point. There was a week when it was just Mateo and me. To sum it up, it was a trying month, yaya-wise.

DECEMBER -  Mateo started walking on his own (not just a few steps but walking around the house!) during the first few days of December! Weee! On a bad note, Mateo had amoebiasis :( Ramil and I were swamped with weddings and we also celebrated our 2nd year anniversary. We were able to stay overnight in Tagaytay, our first night without our baby.

Whew, that’s my 2007 so far. Well, the most I can remember anyway. I can’t wait for what 2008 has in store for us :)

time’s up

Our two-week long break is officially over. Ramil and I are sad beyond words. LOL. We were able to have a lot of quality time during the break. Majority of the break was spent in my parents’ house and being freeloaders, LOL! Mateo also enjoyed the holidays despite the fact that he slept through the whole new year’s eve noise. I’m sure he’ll miss both Ramil and me in the next few days. As for me, I’m going to miss lounging around the house and playing with Mateo without concern for anything. I can’t wait for summer break to start :D

a wedding date

Ramil and I were able to go on a date last January 2. We attended Leo and Dawn’s wedding and it made for a really good date for us. It was held in a beautiful outdoor venue by the bay, the food was great and there was dancing! We definitely had fun.

The ceremony was short and sweet. Ramil and I helped with the usual shower of fresh rose petals and bubbles at the end of the ceremony. I sure hope it looked great in the photos. The reception started earlier than planned. Good thing the couple was able to get a really good caterer. The place was almost ready by the time people got there. Everyone had only nice things to say about the wedding and we’re happy for the newlyweds. We wish them all the best :)

almost over

Our two-week Christmas break is almost over. Wah!!! I am not physically, mentally, nor emotionally ready for it. I’m sure my students aren’t ready for it too. Hopefully, I get to squeeze in some much-needed work before Monday. Now, if only Mateo will give me time to work tomorrow…

no work means housework

One of the things that I love as a teacher are the vacations that we get. Ever since I got married and had a baby, these vacations turn into time that I use to catch up on housework. It’s the time when I would be able to hand over Mateo to Ramil while I clean the house as much as I can.

Even though we have a helper with us, she’s not that good with house cleaning. I’m the type who can be particular with how every part of the house gets cleaned and now that we’re renting a bigger house, I’d sometimes find myself wanting a miele vacuum cleaner. It would surely make the task so much easier. Even my mom, who’s such a neat freak, would love a miele vacuum cleaner. With a baby in the house, cleanliness is really a must and it would be a relief to make it easier to achieve.

Maybe I should teach Mateo how to use a miele vacuum cleaner too, hehe! Seriously though, he gets really interested whenever I’m doing some cleaning. Who knows, maybe I can get some rest and relaxation the next time we get a school break :)

Mateo and Ledi

Mateo loves playing with our golden retriever Ledi. My sister would often joke that Mateo likes to bully Ledi because he’d play rough with him. Although we want him to grow up with a fondness for animals, we don’t want him to get too close to them. We’re worried that he might think he can be as playful with all dogs. Good thing that golden retrievers are such gentle creatures.

reclaiming my lost love

Nope, I’m not talking about an ex-boyfriend :P I’m talking about my love for the piano.

I started taking lessons when I was around nine years old. We didn’t have an actual piano then, all we had was a keyboard that my dad brought home from Japan. My lessons were actually on and off for several years and I stopped altogether when I reached high school. Nevertheless, I continued playing the piano. It served as my stress reliever. I’d often feel relaxed after a few minutes of unwinding on it. My passion for it grew when my mom decided to buy us a real piano. I loved beating on the heavy keys and hearing the sound reverberate as my foot presses on the pedal.

Unfortunately, I haven’t played in a long while, ever since I moved out of my parents’ house. Ramil and I don’t have a piano in our house and I don’t really have time for it whenever we visit my parents. Lately though, Mateo has been taking an interest in it too! He’d eagerly reach for the keys whenever he sees the piano open. I’m thinking of rekindling my love for playing the piano so that I can better share it with him. I’ve been checking out Piano lessons & piano chords on the internet to help me get back into shape. I’m loving Playpiano.com! They offer free piano lessons email newsletter. Hopefully, I get my groove back with the amount of piano resources at my disposal. Who knows, my son might grow up to be a piano master :D
