GonnaBe

As a math teacher, I’ve always have more than enough share of students who are having extreme difficulty with my subject. I know that each child just has his or her own strengths and sometimes, my subject is not one of them. I find it easier to deal with the child once I’ve discovered his or her area of ‘expertise’ so I really try to make an effort to find that out. I don’t expect the child to do better with my subject once I’ve gotten to know him or her more but it does give me a peace of mind thinking that it’s just not his thing.

Recently, I read about Gonnabe.com, a production company and resource center for budding child actors, singers, dancers, and models. The whole idea was interesting to me but what made me sit up and think hard about it are their shows. They produce kid-created content. Their child talents get to learn and actually try acting, screenwriting, and directing. I can’t help but think about some of my students. There are some who could barely pass an exam but could come up with a good story in a minute or two. Some would shine through everytime they are assigned to present a short skit in front of the class. I can’t help but think that an idea like Gonnabe.com would give these children the opportunity to build on their strengths. Sure, they’re gonna need my math but if their potential is in acting, scriptwriting, and directing, then a resource center like this would be a good training ground for them.
